Summer Wars
Summer Wars connects an awkward family visit to a failure in a vast online world. Its distinctive tension is that an apparently virtual crisis depends on very physical relationships and responsibilities.
The linked worlds
GKIDS introduces Kenji, a part-time moderator in the online environment OZ, who accompanies Natsuki as a pretend boyfriend. A rogue AI takes his online identity and the disruption spills into everyday life. The preserved MADB record dates Mamoru Hosoda’s film to 1 August 2009.

What to compare while watching
An editorial pairing with AKIRA asks what happens when technical power escapes the structures meant to contain it. Summer Wars adds a different question: how can a group with unequal ages and skills cooperate? Watch how the family and the online space distribute attention, instead of reading the virtual setting as a prediction of one present-day platform.

For a rewatch
Track who contributes practical knowledge, connections or coordination, rather than only who performs the climactic action. The film is fiction, not a technical explanation of AI or cybersecurity. For home viewing, verify the exact release’s language tracks and extras; the Japanese 2009 release date should not be replaced by a later 4K or digital-store date.
