MY NEIGHBOR TOTORO
A countryside move becomes an encounter with an unfamiliar world in My Neighbor Totoro. The film’s entry point is the curiosity of sisters Satsuki and Mei, rather than a quest to defeat a conventional enemy.
The premise, without the ending
The sisters move with their father to a country house and discover unusual creatures in the house and nearby woods, including Totoro. GKIDS presents the film as a family adventure; the Japanese release record in MADB dates it to 16 April 1988 and credits Hayao Miyazaki.

A way to watch
An editorial viewing prompt: notice how a house, a path and a forest become legible through the girls’ attention. Compare this small-scale approach with the pursuit and machinery of Castle in the Sky. Both are Miyazaki films, but a shared director does not make their rhythms or stakes identical.

For a double bill or a disc purchase
The catalogue records the same Japanese release date for Grave of the Fireflies. That is an interesting historical pairing, but it is not a promise of a similar viewing experience: the latter deals with war and severe deprivation. For a disc, compare language tracks, subtitle options and region compatibility on the exact edition; a modern disc release date is separate from the 1988 film release.
